MY STORY
Linda Camacho is an LGBTQ+, disabled, body-positive, and mental health human-rights advocate and Latinx artist who wishes to change the world with her words and music, with the intention of giving hope to marginalized communities and anyone struggling in life.
Linda Camacho was born to immigrant parents in Toronto, Canada, where she grew up most of her life, as well as being raised in places such as Calgary, Richmond Hill, Scarborough, and her parents’ respective countries. Her father is from Uruguay, and her mother, who is also her manager, is from El Salvador, creating an amazing mother-daughter team.
She is a bilingual artist, singer, songwriter, stand-up comedian, improviser, actor, scriptwriter, novelist, and dancer who has performed in places such as Hungary, Romania, China, Los Angeles, New York, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto, and Mexico City
Starting from the age of 4, Linda first found her passion on stage through ballet and musical theatre. She then found her passion for hip-hop styles, tropical Latino styles, and Hungarian dancing, for which she went to perform in Hungary and Romania.
She found her confidence in singing when she got solos and sang in choir during high school and into her early 20s, where she had the opportunity to sing and dance in festivals in China and New York.
Linda has overcome a lot of adversity, starting from childhood. She was subjected to moving from school to school whenever her parents had to move for work or other circumstances, which comprised a total of 15 schools. Sometimes she was able to make friends, and sometimes she felt like an outcast. She faced bullying due to being overweight, for being the new kid in class, or even for being the only Latina in class.
Her parents were the hardest-working people she knew, but she still felt out of place when she realized she was in a different financial bracket than her peers at school. She had also begun her struggles with mental health, having been diagnosed with depression and anxiety. Nevertheless, she persevered by focusing on her passion for writing jokes starting at the age of 14.
Linda finally felt a sense of confidence when she entered high school in Calgary, becoming a social butterfly and joining theatre, improv, choir, rugby, show choir, and Hungarian dancing. Throughout her 20s, she continued with her passions of participating in choirs and eventually found a musical producer and friend, Kayve, who would help her record covers in his studio.
During this time in her 20s was also the hardest time of her life. She struggled with having her heart broken by relationships, which she would eventually be inspired by and turn her heartache into songs and jokes. She gained more weight and began having more health issues. She was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, a debilitating and incurable chronic pain disorder, at the young age of 23. The activities she once could do were more of a struggle, as there is no real treatment for pain. At this point in her life, she was grateful for her parents, who helped her with even the most minute tasks, such as carrying groceries or even something as simple as holding her purse or holding a door.
Life got even harder for her, facing Canadian doctors, who largely ignored her pleas for tests to figure out what they could do to help her. Despite doctors dismissing her symptoms, she continued to advocate for herself. She persevered, always having an admiration for music in her heart and mind. In 2019, she re-ignited a passion of hers and took her first stand-up comedy class in the prestigious Second City establishment.
Within her first month of comedy, she was already hired to perform on stage, having her debut on a show hosted by the memorable and hilarious Precious Chong, daughter of notable actor Tommy Chong. She found a new joy in being on stage and making people laugh and feel good about themselves with a unique take on her comedic style. Her jokes bring a sense of self-confidence and a feminist approach with her body-positive and sex-positive humour, as well as her captivating stories of her Latina-Canadian upbringing. She then started combining her love of singing with comedy and turned her bits into musical stand-up.
When everyone had paused their careers during lockdown, Linda’s career began to flourish. She began doing stand-up online through Zoom, Twitch, and other platforms. This enabled her to meet comedians and perform for people all around the world, and she became co-host/co-producer of two weekly online shows.
During this time, she was also discovered by an agent and started auditioning online for TV shows, films, and commercials. Her credits include a short film called The Ventriloquist’s Last Laugh and starring in a short documentary called The Punchline.
In 2023, Linda was invited to perform at the Burbank Comedy Festival in Burbank, California. But things came to a halt when she struggled with her health again. She eventually found doctors who listened to her and helped her figure out why she was constantly struggling with her weight, having been properly diagnosed with PCOS, a condition that affects between 6–13% of women worldwide, with many women not being properly diagnosed due to doctors ignoring women’s symptoms. With treatment, she was finally able to start dancing again and focused her time on studying another comedic art form, improv, at Bad Dog Theatre and Second City.
In 2024, Linda was invited by a producer named Abraham Rodriguez to work on her first album in Mexico City, with the intention of registering her songs for the Latin Grammys. In less than a year, Linda Camacho has released two rock/pop albums, Without Borders in English and Sin Barreras in Spanish, as well as releasing two tropical songs in Spanish called Enamorada de Lejos, a bachata, and Amor Imposible, a cumbia featuring Estudiantina Jehudiel. She also wrote a song for another Mexican artist under Abraham Rodriguez’s label, Arl Producciones, named Hel Rey, called La Perla Escondida, in a regional style called Norteño. Her songs are written with the purpose of reaching an audience who might need a confidence boost, while also talking about a Higher Power and having a feminist and self-empowering point of view.
This year marks her first year being nominated for a Monster Music Award in the category of “Mejor Solista Crossover (Best Crossover Solo Artist)”, and she will be registering her music with the Canadian awards called the Junos. She looks forward to continuing her journey of writing songs not just for herself but for others and is currently writing her first novel. She has also finished her first script in hopes that she can become the first successful Latinx-Canadian–El Salvadoran–Uruguayan director/writer.
